Several years ago, after watching "American Idol" on my direct tv hd dvr receiver, I tuned into a new drama featuring Hugh Laurie as acerbic diagnostic doctor Gregory House. I quickly became hooked on "House," as Laurie, a Brit playing an American, brought the same endearingly nasty wit to the screen that Simon Cowell did when criticizing deluded young wannabe singers.
"House" is a very formulaic show, with each episode essentially consisting of House getting a problem patient, figuring out several potential solutions to his or her problem, stumbling a bit and then eventually hitting upon the correct diagnosis. It doesn't sound like a terribly promising premise, but it's the complicated central character who makes the show so worthwhile.
Other actors hold their own as well, with a supporting core of young doctors making up House's team, which changes every couple of seasons, and Lisa Edelstein as Cuddy, House's boss who keeps butting heads with him. The strongest supporting member of the cast is Robert Sean Leonard, who is a compassionate oncologist and perhaps the only person who can truly call House a friend. Their bromance is the beating heart of the series and sparks far deeper emotions than any of the various romantic encounters that the characters have throughout the series.
Greg House isn't a very nice guy, but that makes him all the more fun to watch.
